Chapter 10
But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles;
they shall run, and not be weary;
and they shall walk, and not faint.
Isaiah 40:31
* * *
It was a few days on when Esther got the letter to return to the doctor. She hadn’t heard from her brother, or from Devon.
She sat alone in the doctor’s office as he explained things to her. Dr. Schaffer had consulted with his colleague, and they were both in agreement that Esther’s hearing loss was permanent and there was nothing they could do apart from aiding her hearing with devices.
In her heart, Esther knew that was what he’d say, but she was annoyed that she had allowed herself that glimmer of hope that something might be able to be done. Devon had done that to her. She had been okay with how things were and she’d been happy and content with her life before he’d come along. Why had Devon given her hope that she might become normal?
Esther sat in the chair and watched the doctor’s mouth as he prattled on with technical words. She had no idea what he was saying and neither did she care at that point. She wondered if William was right and that Devon didn’t want her unless she was perfect. Would Devon want a wife who was deaf? Is that why he hadn’t been back to see her? Surely Devon would have talked to William by now. Or, was Devon waiting on the doctor’s findings before he pleaded hard with her brother to see her again?
“Do you understand all that I’ve just said?”
Esther looked from the doctor’s mouth up into his eyes. She realized she must have had a glazed over look on her face. “Yes, Doctor. I got the main things. There’s nothing that can be done. It’s the same thing I was told years ago. Well, the same thing my parents were told years ago.”
Esther walked out of the doctor’s office and got into her small buggy and headed home. In a way she was glad that nothing could be done, as she was never comfortable having people poke instruments in her ears. Now she could be left alone, everyone could leave her alone.
Her animals understood her just fine, she had no trouble when she went to town to buy things, her hearing became a problem only if others confronted her. All the way home she thought about how strangers generally treated her when they found out she couldn’t hear. They treated her as if she were stupid. Her life was settled, fine, even now that she needed to stay alone in the house. She missed her parents, sometimes badly, but it was indeed nice to run things in her own way.
When her house came in to view she saw that William’s wagon was outside. She nervously looked around, fearing that Devon might be lurking around as well—the last thing she needed today was to see her brother or Devon.
